Lyon have announced the signing of a new striker in the form of Mariano Diaz from Real Madrid this evening, as speculation goes on over Alexandre Lacazette’s potential transfer to Arsenal.
The Ligue 1 giants also brought in Bertrand Traore from Chelsea earlier in the transfer window, suggesting they’re preparing to lose their top scorer as big clubs circle this summer.
Lacazette scored 37 times in all competitions last season to attract interest from both Arsenal and Atletico Madrid, with the latter possibly now out of the running due to being hit with a transfer ban until January.
Reports suggest Arsenal are edging closer to landing the France international, but Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas gave little away as Mariano was unveiled.
‘The moment hasn’t come to reach an agreement with Arsenal under current conditions (offered),’ he said, despite growing reports to the contrary and Aulas’ own words earlier in the day.
Mariano played 14 games and scored five goals for Real Madrid last season as he failed to establish himself as a regular for Zinedine Zidane’s side.
However, the 23-year-old is a highly regarded prospect and has been snapped up alongside another promising youngster in Traore by a Lyon side with a proud record of developing players before selling them on for a healthy profit.
Arsenal fans will hope that Lyon’s latest arrival more or less confirms a deal for Lacazette is in fact imminent.
